Germany is lagging behind in the smart meter rollout - no flexibility in the electricity system without digitalisation, no energy transition without flexibility. Germany's special approach to smart metering systems and control boxes is expensive, complicated and slow. European neighbouring countries, on the other hand, have taken other paths and were more successful with them.
Together with experts from the regulatory and practical fields, the Association of Energy Market Innovator shows the status quo in Germany compared to other European countries when it comes to the smart meter rollout and what is already possible with smart metering systems in other European countries.

Lars Petereit is Head of Digital Energy Transition and Electrification at the German Association of the New Energy Economy and is responsible for the areas of digitalisation, flexibility, heat and mobility. He studied political science, economics and renewable energies. Previously, he worked as a Policy & Energy Industry Officer at the German Heat Pump Association and in the European lobby of an energy-intensive company.
Robert Busch has been Managing Director of the Bundesverband Neue Energiewirtschaft e.V. (bne) since 2005 and is committed to a liberal, competition-orientated and unbureaucratic energy industry. Born in Cologne, he studied law in Münster, Würzburg and Speyer and began his career in the energy industry in 1999 as legal counsel at ares AG. As a member of the ‘Grid Access Task Force’ at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, he helped to lay the foundations for functioning competition on the energy markets - in 2002 still without the support of a regulatory authority. From 2003 to 2005, he was Managing Director of statt-werk GmbH before taking on his role at the bne.
Tomás Llobet has been Managing Director of ESMIG - The European Smart Metering Association since 2020, representing companies of all sizes, from SMEs to multinationals. They provide products, information technology and services. With over 20 years of experience in EU affairs and association management, his focus is on climate and energy policy. Before joining ESMIG, Tomás worked in the European Parliament, in a think tank and in a public affairs consultancy in Brussels.
Janina Ketterer is Head of German System Change at Octopus Energy. She previously worked at the European Bank for Reconstruction and the UK government. Janina studied economics in Munich and London and graduated with a PhD in energy and climate economics.
